How to add line breaks to Instagram captions
Write your caption as plain text, use Return or Enter to start a new line, and use a second line break when you want a blank line between paragraphs. Copy the whole caption, paste it into Instagram, and check the spacing in the app before you publish.
This guide is about the written description beneath a post, not video subtitles. The examples below give you a few simple ways to separate a hook, the details, and a final question without filling the caption with dots or decorative symbols.
Start with three short paragraphs
Give each paragraph a job. Put the main idea first, the useful detail next, and the action or question last. You don't need to put every sentence on its own line. If two sentences explain the same thought, keep them together.
- Draft the caption in the editor below or another plain-text editor.
- Press Return or Enter twice between the sections you want to separate.
- Copy the entire caption, including the blank lines.
- Paste into Instagram's caption field. Check the result on the device you use to publish; a browser preview cannot guarantee Instagram's final layout.
Try the spacing before you copy
The editor preserves the line breaks you type. “Clean line endings” removes spaces and tabs at the ends of lines while keeping your paragraph breaks. It doesn't insert hidden spacing characters.

If your line breaks disappear
First check the source text. A sentence that wraps because your screen is narrow is not the same as a line break you inserted. In the editor, place the cursor at the end of a paragraph and press Return or Enter twice.
Next, try copying from plain text instead of a formatted document. If you use a scheduling tool, compare its saved caption with the text in Instagram. This helps locate where the formatting changed. Re-enter the breaks in Instagram's caption field if necessary, then inspect the result again.
Cleaning trailing spaces is a useful diagnostic step, not a guaranteed Instagram fix. If a caption still looks different, simplify it to two short paragraphs and check that version. App versions, publishing routes, and display widths can differ.
Do you need invisible characters or dots?
Start with ordinary line breaks. Dots add visible punctuation; invisible characters make the underlying text harder to inspect. This editor doesn't use either. If a publishing workflow removes blank lines, fix or check that step before adding extra characters.
Does spacing improve reach?
This guide makes no reach or ranking claim. Paragraphs can make a long caption easier for a reader to scan, but formatting alone does not tell you whether people will find or respond to a post. Use spacing to make the message clearer.

Once the layout feels right, check the wording. Make sure dates and product details are accurate, remove repeated sentences, and keep the final question specific.
